I HAVE A TELEFUNKEN U47, IS IT BETTER THAN YOUR NEUMANN U47?
No, in fact they are the same model mic made in the same place during the same era. Telefunken did not build studio mics, they marketed studio mics built by Neumann, AKG, and Schoeps. So if you have a Telefunken ela M251, it was built by AKG, and if you have a Telefunken 221b, it was built by Schoeps. This Telefunken from Germany in the 1950's through the 1960's should not be confused with the modern manufacturer Telefunken Elektroakustik from the USA.
IS THE U47 FET REALLY LEGENDARY FOR OBTAINING LARGER THAN LIFE KICK & BASS TRACKS, AS WELL AS THICK & FULL VOCALS?
Yes and no. The U47fet had a very lean sound, unlike it's tube relative the U47, largely due to it's discreet op amp electronics. Because of the design engineers' quest for low noise and high headroom, the mic may be placed much closer to the source than a U47 tube, so the proximity effect is greater, giving the appearace of “more bass”. And there is no reputable experienced engineer who would genuinely suggest to you the U47fet is a good choice for “thick” vocals.
IS MARKETING, BY DEFINITION, OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH?
Not necessarily. For us marketing is simply an attempt to reach users who haven't heard of us, and we don't lie in this effort. This FAQ page is proof of that.
